To be fair I think mpg is an important part of the overall argument - not just the amount of gases. As drilling & transporting oil all have emissions, so this has to be taken into consideration with cars/SUVs which use more fuel (although they may be 'cleaner' than older cars).

The overall picture has to be looked at. If an old car is getting twice the milage as a modern SUV, is the modern SUV putting out half the gases aswell? That's something I haven't got a clue on - anyone have anu ideas/proof of this?

Basically EVERYBODY has to lower their consumption of fuel to do their part in this problem.

My Auntie who lives in the US said the same thing, people are buying smaller cars due to the cost of fuel.
