To be fair I think mpg is an important part of the overall argument - not just the amount of gases. As drilling & transporting oil all have emissions, so this has to be taken into consideration with cars/SUVs which use more fuel (although they may be 'cleaner' than older cars).

The overall picture has to be looked at. If an old car is getting twice the milage as a modern SUV, is the modern SUV putting out half the gases aswell? That's something I haven't got a clue on - anyone have anu ideas/proof of this?

Basically EVERYBODY has to lower their consumption of fuel to do their part in this problem.

My Auntie who lives in the US said the same thing, people are buying smaller cars due to the cost of fuel.

in the usa and especially california (arnold's state) all the "socially responsible" people are trying to buy the toyota primus and people who drive suvs and trucks are looked down on as low class red necks and bling merchants. i drive a porsche and have been labelled selfish, ignorant and low class because of it!

need to buy one of these

the comparison is not between old cars and new cars! it is between new responsible cars like the toyota and new irresponsible cars like the suv. years ago people did not fully understand the consequences of burning fossil fuels like they do today. today there is no excuse for driving a big gas guzzler. it really is a sign of a low mentality and low class person.

Trying to see the link here between class and size of engine in your car or size of your car, certainly not one in this country unless you reinvent the class system to your own standards.

lol. seeing class as a system is such a british thing. my friends in england and to a lesser extent in in scotland make me laugh when they talk about the class system in the context of this thread "class" should be understood not as a strata of society but an indicator of refinement, like high-brow and low-brow.

You are still turning it into a simple if you have a big engined car you are low class, in other words you set the system to your own wishes.
