how can the world establish more equality in food distribution to 1) help feed the hungry and 2) reduce the caloric intake of people in the west?

Stop importing so much food - use home grown 'in season' food.

the answer is stop processing food, as cd mentioned eat locally grown food, stop commodity trading/speculating in food, stop subsidising western farmers (in fact all farmers), eat a more vegetarian diet because producing 1lb of meat takes 8 lb of grain which could have been used to feed the hungry and basically dont eat for the sake of eating, eat because youre hungry.
