Absolutely, i also feel your personal worth (as far as such a thing is measurable) is infinitiely more important than anything more tangible like a degree.
We've digressed a little from the point i was trying to make:
That government targets of 50% and lax entry requirements along with "university status" for all the old colleges devalues any degree that isn't impressive in its own right.

And that this in turn has lead to my own questioning of whether my degree is worth its cost if it isn't Oxbridge. I don't see this as throwing toys out of a pram.
Also, i stated that Advertising Marketing and sales would be the path i sought if i DIDN'T go to university, not neccessarily the one i would seek with my desired degree.

Incidentally Uk what line are you currently working in? i expect a vague answer (understandably) and feel you may have answered this before, if so my apologies.

Candleguy - I don't mean to be at all rude here but your previous comment about a degree from a university other than Oxford or Cambridge being not worth the effort is complete and utter rubbish. Yes these are the two best Universities in the country but a good degree from any of the "Ivy League" Universities is always favourably looked upon. However, it is not just the degree you do and where you get it. Unless you are reading a vocational subject then the grade you obtain as opposed to the subject it is in is far more important. Furthermore, the cultural and social experience you obtain at university is invaluable and this is recognised by potantial employers as well.

Personally, i have a degree in Psychology from the University of Liverpool (I'm just saying this to illustrate a point by the way) and whilst my degree was intersting, the whole experience of going to University was the best thing I have done n my (relatively) short life. You get out of your hometown enclave, meet so many different people from all over the world, etc and your whole perspective and attitude changes. My degree isn't particularly useful for one type of industry (apart from working in some branch of psychology) but the fact that I have a good degree from a good university, plus I did a lot of worhtwhile extra-curricular activities (I ran a hiphop night through the university for 3 years and DJ'd round the NW plus other things) all added to my character and at the end of the day, my CV.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound like I'm talking about myself there, but I just think you really are limiting yourself if you think Oxbridge is the only way forward. A degree from Oxbridge will be a big help for you but if you don't have the well-rounded personality to back it up you really wont get anywhere ( I have a number of Oxbridge graduate friends who are struggling at the moment for this reason). I also realise the cost of going to university has escalated a lot recently ( I was the first year to pay the fees when they were introduced) but as long as you do a worthwhile degree at a good university I guarantee you will not regret it. My first year at University was the best year of my life and I'm fortunate enough now to have a decent job aborad that I love.

Don't disregard the idea mate.

My line of work is irrelevant. If you get straight A's in your A-Levels and I presume you are doing 4 or 5 then if Oxbridge reject you just make sure you get a first at another red brick uni.
