Default Fashion Auction Website Success/Failure

Hey guys I was thinking about maybe designing a website in which designer clothes go up for auction. Of course there would be a reserve set for the what cost was at wholesale price but after that the customer gets to decide what they want to pay for it. Allows customer to get things cheaper than it would be at the retail store and also hype about deciding what they want it for (retail). Instead of the stores deciding what the retail price is the customer gets to choose. I just wondered what you guys thought. Would it a possible success or do think it would be a failure and the reason why for what you think it would be.

There's a clothing auction on Kitmeout which is hardly used. eBay has an unbreakable monopoly on auctions.

A great idea in concept, but gotta agree with wasted on this. E bay has the absolute monopoly and whilst there are dodgy sellers selling fakes, there are still some decent honest people selling legit gear for good prices too.

Well I got bored one day and was thinking about a way to make some money on the side. Just wondered if with proper design and link placement would it be a hit or not.

as wasted said the kitmeout one has been going for years and has got nowhere. everything thinks ebay when they think auctions.

it would take a fortune to generate even a moderate amount of traffic for a new site and you would probably earn back 1% of what you out lay.

Therein lyes the problem, such a project would be a major undertaking both financially and timewise, there are probably much easier ways to make a bit of money on the side than such an ambitious project such as this. I am sure it could work and your idea is sound, but the returns would be minimal without commiting fully.

I hear what your saying Dunny. Financially yes it would put a dent into my pocket. The only thing I am not worried about financially would be the design of the site. Yes I would have to fork the money out for the domain name, server host and then all the layouts that I want to use but I wouldn't have to pay someone to design it because I can do that and have plenty of my friends that can help with that if needed. I think the real money would have to come when finding a authentic wholesaler and buying the product. Even though its at a low cost I think the price tag still will be quite high. I guess I am going to have to ponder what to do like you said. Because it will take alot of commitment if I want to go down the road of this idea.

its not the design its the development and then the most important thing is the merchants/customers?

sounds like a good idea.
you have the whole world out there as potential customers.
attract a fraction of those and you can make money, no doubt about it.
how much is depending on how hard you will work for it.
no pain no gain.
not everyone will succeed but
e-commerce is a fact and will only grow bigger.

zoovillage.com has something similar going already.
