Polo Ralph Lauren Big Pony
A Close Friend Works For Polo Ralph Lauren In Boston And He Told Me The Big Pony Was A Marketing Idea So That Their Logo Could Be Seen More Clearly On Television. And There I Was Thinking It Was A True Design Step.

I think you are probably right!
I'm not 100% sure but I guess it was when Ralph Lauren became the official kit supplier for the US Open - I think that's when it came in. All the all boys/girls, refs/umpires etc wear Ralph Lauren clothing. By having the large pony people watching the tennis match would clearly see the branding - as you say on TV.
Have to see if there's any history about it & when it came in. I think it was 2005 when they became clothing sponsors - my auntie sent me the cap from the 2005 US Open.

Yeah that sounds right. I am sure that is also the case at Wimbledon. Also a lot of golfers wear RL and they are wearing the big pony stuff too.

Just had a quick look - couldn't see anything on Polo.com about when the big pony was first introduced. It did say in 2005 it signed a deal with the US Open to supply the kit. Then in 2006 they signed a deal with Wimbledon to supply kit.
I found this - "especially since 2005 heralded the return of the signature Big Pony as an eye-catching embellishment".
So 'the return' - did the original Ralph Lauren shirts/polos etc have the Big Pony on them (like 20, 30, 40+ years ago)?
