With a shirt like that I'd be wearing a dark suit and I'd compliment the shirt with matching Cufflinks

i agree solids should be limited but you can wear one multi-coloured garment and compliment that with 1 solid.

how about tone-on-tone, how many of those can you do? 3 tints of one color or more?

A mix of tones can be good but i wouldnt advise starting with pink as a shirt and working your way down to bright red for shoes LOL

Think a mix of tones is excellent, particularly when wearing a suit. Different shades of blue or grey for suit, shirt and tie for example.
