Default ted baker clothing

so i am reading that ted baker retail sales are up 17.5% to £53.3m, which got me thinking do most people buy cheaper brands during a recession or do people still buy the top brands to help give the impression of success and optimisim?

this is what ted baker (aka ray kelvin) has to say about his brands success this year.

Commenting, Ray Kelvin, Founder and Chief Executive, said: “The Group has performed well during the first half of the year and the strength of the Ted Baker brand combined with our successful multi-channel distribution strategy and careful international expansion has enabled us to deliver good growth for the period in an unpredictable market. The initial response to our Autumn/Winter collections has been positive. Since the period end we have opened new retail stores in Bristol and Liverpool and look forward to the opening of our two new stores in the White City development in Westfield London. The Board is, however, mindful of the uncertain economic environment and we remain understandably cautious about trading in the second half of the year.“

Renowned for his quirky sense of humour and close attention to detail, Ted Baker has grown steadily since his beginnings as a shirt specialist in Glasgow back in 1988. In fact, today Ted Baker is a global lifestyle brand that distributes through its own retail outlets, leading department stores and key independents throughout Europe, USA, Middle East and Asia. Or as the man himself prefers to put it, ‘No Ordinary Designer Label.’

Profits up 17.5%. Hmmmm.................sounds like a VAT fiddle to me or am just reading the numbers wrong?LOL. Anyway, the way i see it the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. What this means is that shops that sell at the low end of the market are doing well and those at the high end of the market are doing well. Its the brands in the middle that are suffering. Good bye middle England!

So why are they then spending money on Ted Baker during this recession?

I suppose the really wealthy aren't affected too much by a recession and still have a large amount to splash on luxury goods. Those they don't have a huge income but spend a big big chunk on luxury fashion will probably be most affected as they may not be able to continue buying the luxury designers due to increase in all their other expenses and instead cut back on the 'luxury-ness' (). Therefore going for 'designer' brands like Ted Baker etc.

Would you rather have one very expensive luxury item or a handful of cheaper designer items?

Good question that. Would I prefer to have a full ensemble of say Henri Lloyd ( Jumper, Polo shirt, Jeans and shoes), or would I prefer to wear a Gucci Jacket with Walmart Jeans, T shirt and shoes. LOL
