Physiological needs, which refer to the basic needs of survival. Basically the air we breathe, food, sex and sleep.
Safety needs, which refer to personal security financial security and health for instance.
Social needs or one's belonging like intimacy, family and friends.
Esteem, everybody has the basic need to fit in and we do what we can to fit in the society. Respect and be respected etc. How we see ourselves and want others to see us.
Self actualization; awareness of one's own being, morals and creativity to name a few.
The above deficiency needs are the basic needs of human being and if these are not met individual psyche is disturbed and cause anxious feelings and tension.
Basically these basic needs are harnessed in many marketing efforts in portraying products in a manner improving their lifestyle, whether it's increasing security or enhancing one's social status and thus esteem. We all need to fit in. Otherwise we are unable to function in the society.
That's it in a nutshell. There is a lot of stuff written about Maslow and his hierarchies. The hierarchies have somewhat evolved along the years but the basics remain there.
